USA Today recently covered MeRT® and what its clinical trial results could mean for people living with PTSD.

The results
USA Today reported that 68% of patients in the clinical trial no longer met the criteria for PTSD after treatment, with an average 52% reduction in symptoms. The trial involved 158 adults with PTSD, who received either MeRT or a sham treatment.

See the publicly available FDA 510k Summary Statement K260402.

How MeRT works
As the article explains, MeRT starts with an EEG that records the brain’s electrical activity. An algorithm then uses those measurements to help tailor transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) pulse rate for each individual. While TMS is used for conditions such as depression, MeRT “takes it a step further by using each patient’s brain measurements to guide the treatment.”

Why it matters
An estimated 6% of Americans will experience PTSD in their lifetimes. Treatment typically involves psychotherapy, medication, or both, but many people continue to experience symptoms or struggle to complete treatment. MeRT offers a non-pharmaceutical treatment option.

MeRT is FDA-cleared as an adjunct for treatment of adults with PTSD.
